"The memory of the memorable battles grows cold. The liberals who applaud their outcomes and live in their light forget the motivation that drove the champions of freedom. They approve religious intervention in the political process selectively: it's great when it's on their side. In a secular age, Freedom of Speech is more talismanic than Freedom of Religion. But the latter is the first freedom in our Bill of Rights. It is in terms of this first freedom that this case should be decided," the judge said.

Sheriff Gib Cady, 2009 President, stated, “We are constitutional officers who take an oath to uphold the constitution and we have decided to take a leadership role on this issue. This is the number one issue that our constituents talk to us about.” There are two states, Illinois and Wisconsin, which do not allow some sort of concealed or open carry. “The ISA has been neutral on this issue for years but the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision and the feedback and the experience from the other states has turned that tide. Out of 79 sheriffs responding to our survey, 90% of those sheriffs support concealed carry with the right type of restrictions, training and scrutiny. They also believe that local law enforcement should have the right to object to a permit application with justifiable cause,” said Sullivan. The resolution is as follows: Whereas

speculated on why a snake might be chosen as a symbol for America. First, it occurred to him that "the Rattle-Snake is found in no other quarter of the world besides America." The rattlesnake also has sharp eyes, and "may therefore be esteemed an emblem of vigilance." Furthermore, "She never begins an attack, nor, when once engaged, ever surrenders: She is therefore an emblem of magnanimity and true courage. ... she never wounds 'till she has generously given notice, even to her enemy, and cautioned him against the danger of treading on her." Finally, "I confess I was wholly at a loss what to make of the rattles, 'till I went back and counted them and found them just thirteen, exactly the number of the Colonies united in America; and I recollected too that this was the only part of the Snake which increased in numbers. ... "'Tis curious and amazing to observe how distinct and independent of each other the rattles of this animal are, and yet how firmly they are united together, so as never to be separated but by breaking them to pieces. One of those rattles singly, is incapable of producing sound, but the ringing of thirteen together, is sufficient to alarm the boldest man living."

This being my own weblog about guns and the right to life, I would be remiss if I didn't post something about what happened to me today.
I drew my weapon to the ready on a big crazy guy in the parking lot outside my office, clearly insane, violent, and threatening to kill me. Fortunately no shots were fired, I was able to withdraw to safety, and there were lots of witnesses (the guard in the lobby plus occupants of the building watching from upstairs; the disturbance started on a floor occupied by University of Phoenix, where this poor guy was a student).
Ironically, at the time I was preparing to teach a ccw class tomorrow morning, at my law office in the same building. Too busy now prepping for the class to reflect much on this now, but it's difficult to ignore a shock like this. First time I've ever faced a direct and immediate threat of criminal attack.

Prime Minister Vladamir Putin has said the US should take a lesson from the pages of Russian history and not exercise “excessive intervention in economic activity and blind faith in the state’s omnipotence”. “In the 20th century, the Soviet Union made the state’s role absolute,” Putin said during a speech at the opening ceremony of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “In the long run, this made the Soviet economy totally uncompetitive. This lesson cost us dearly. I am sure nobody wants to see it repeated.” Sounding more like Barry Goldwater than the former head of the KGB, Putin said, “Nor should we turn a blind eye to the fact that the spirit of free enterprise, including the principle of personal responsibility of businesspeople, investors, and shareholders for their decisions, is being eroded in the last few months. There is no reason to believe that we can achieve better results by shifting responsibility onto the state.”

Today, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled unanimously in support of allowing employees to store legally owned firearms in locked, private motor vehicles while parked in employer parking lots. This decision upholds NRA-backed legislation passed in 2004. “This is a victory for the millions of American workers who have been denied the right to protect themselves while commuting between their homes and their workplace,” said NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre. “This effort was aimed at skirting the will of the American people, and the intent of legislatures across this country while eviscerating Right-to-Carry laws. This ruling is a slap at the corporate elitists who have no regard for the constitutional rights of law abiding American workers.”

Some radicalized Islamic inmates are current or former members of street or prison gangs, indicating an emerging "crossover" trend from gang member to Islamist extremist. Radicalization activity levels appear to be higher in high population areas on the West Coast and in the northeastern United States.

Not surprisingly, homeland security experts are still looking for other neutralization techniques, ones that don't involve hugging. And here there is another divide in the field. The association of police chiefs recommended this year that police on the scene simply shoot suspected bombers in the head - "specifically, at the tip of the nose when facing the bomber . . .or about one inch below the base of the skull from behind." The London officers who two weeks after the July bombings killed an innocent Brazilian man whom they suspected of being a suicide bomber were operating on similar instructions, a shoot-to-kill policy known as Operation Kratos. There are other techniques to disarm a bomber, though, that don't involve guns.

On Jan. 6, U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush of Illinois introduced federal legislation aimed at increasing license requirements and ownership restrictions for firearms. House Resolution 45, also known as Blair Holt's Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009, is named for a Chicago high school student killed on a public bus in May 2007 when another young man boarded and started shooting, Rush said. Holt used his body to shield a girl from the line of fire and was shot in the abdomen. Rush's legislation seeks to prohibit owning or selling a gun without a license issued by the U.S. attorney general's office. The bill also would make it illegal to keep a loaded firearm or an unloaded firearm and its ammunition where there are children younger than 18, according to the bill's text.
