How About an Apology from UCI?

So the UCI student with the airsoft rifle has apologized to fellow students: New University » Letter to the Editor (probably under compulsion).

The student should, if anything, be treated as a hero for practicing skills he may use defending his country or family or neighbor.

In America, there isn't anything wrong with what he did.  Not too long ago, students in California routinely walked to school with rifles they shot at high school rifle ranges.  REAL rifles.

I would like to see an apology from UCI for (1) mistakenly detaining an innocent student, (2) overreacting to a perfectly legal airsoft toy gun, (3) instilling fear by creating a dangerous "Victim Disarmament Zone" free of legally-owned guns, and (4) through that fear, encouraging anti-gun bigotry and intolerance.

The student deserves some blame perhaps.  There is nothing wrong with what he did in America, but UCI is not America.  And you have to be extra careful around small children, which is what UCI produces in large supply.

Janet Nguyen deserves a great deal of praise for her response to the grand jury faulting the appointed sheriff for an arbitrary and capricious ccw policy.  Her proposal passed the Board 4 to 1, Moorlach against of course.  Norby was great as usual, Campbell a little wishy washy to "get along" but his heart's in the right place and he voted right.

The Social Security Administration, which sent out 52 million checks, says that some of those checks mistakenly went to dead people because the agency had no record of their death. That amounts to between 8,000 and 10,000 checks for millions of dollars. The feds blame a rushed schedule, because all the checks have to be cut by June. The strange thing is, some of the checks were made out to people -- like Romonini -- who were never even part of the Social Security system.

Despite the deadly machinations of the sadistic Nero and a particularly frightening sequence on the ice planet Delta Vega where Kirk is chased by a horrific monster, the film imparts a generally positive worldview, refreshingly different from the bleakness of so many futuristic stories. To demonstrate Kirk's way with the ladies, though, there's a questionable scene of his making love to a Green Orion girl. The scene is fairly short but gratuitous, as is his ogling of her roommate (none other than Uhura# as she begins to disrobe #no nudity). That and the use of several expletives restrict this to mature teens and up. And apart from the Kirk scene, the film is devoid of sexual content. The film contains intense but not graphic action violence, a short but frisky bedroom scene with skimpy attire, some crude language and a single profanity. The USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification is A-III -- adults. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is PG-13 -- parents strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.

Star Trek is rated PG-13 for sci-fi action and violence, and brief sexual content (Kirk is seen in bed with a woman, but they are both in their underwear and they are quickly interrupted). There are also a few brief vulgarities (i.e. the sort of "colourful metaphors" that Kirk and Spock were not familiar with when they visited the 20th century in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home).

Navy Jacks Flying in Ladera Ranch

More and more houses in Ladera Ranch (well, at least on my street) are now flying the First Navy Jack, a flag from the Revolutionary War, popular with the current tea party movement and featured prominently by the newly influential Tenth Amendment Center.

I started flying mine a few months ago, not realizing others were having the same idea.  I took mine to a tea party on April 15 and was surprised to see several others there.  I then purchased quite a few to give out to my CCW students (www.7-4-1776.us), including my neighbor two doors down who is retired Navy (Annapolis grad) and flying it proudly.  Another neighbor on my street has paid for a seat in the class and will be flying the flag soon.  (She is Neighborhood Rep and is running to be on the board of directors for LARCS.) A fourth Navy Jack will soon be flying by a neighbor on the other side of our little street, who it turns out runs one of the main blogs on Friedrich Hayek.

Finally, I just received a call from someone that wants me to hold one of my mobile CCW classes in another part of Ladera Ranch, for ten students--that will be another ten Navy Jacks and we are just getting started.
