Eight year old boy shooting Uzi submachine gun with father at organized event dies tragically.  I posted recently on my 7 year old daughter shooting an Uzi when we went to Front Sight over July 4th.  (She'll get to do it again next weekend.)  At Front Sight, the instructor holds the weapon as the child shoots, and the bursts are short--2 or 3 rounds.

Volcker's comments here.  So how can the goverenment restore trust?  To begin with, follow Machiavelli's admonition not to disarm the citizenry:

FAA Rescinded Rule Allowing Pilot Carry After Al-Qaeda Warning, Two Months Before 9/11

Old WND story from 2002 - never been able to ignore this coincidence, since I first saw the story:

The Federal Aviation Administration rescinded a rule allowing commercial airline pilots to be armed the same month it received a classified briefing that Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network may be planning hijackings of U.S. airliners.

As WorldNetDaily reported Thursday, an FAA spokesman confirmed that its armed-pilot rule, which was adopted in 1961 in response to the Cuban missile crisis, was repealed in July 2001 – just two months before the Sept. 11 attacks – because in 40 years' time, not a single U.S. airline took advantage of it.

Historic Briefs on Second Amendment “Incorporation” Filed (9th Circus, California Ring)

NRA-ILA reports:  

A California law suit that has been bouncing back and forth in the court for almost ten years has become the unlikely vehicle by which the question of whether the Second Amendment is “incorporated” so it restricts state and local gun control efforts may be answered. 

Following on the heels of the June Supreme Court ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller that the Second Amendment does protect a fundamental individual right and restricts federal action restricting the right to keep and bear arms, today members of an NRA led coalition of self-defense civil rights groups filed a flurry of “friend of the court” amicus briefs in the case of Nordyke v. Alamenda. The Nordyke case is now before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. It was filed by gun show promoters challenging an ordinance that bans guns on county property (effectively banning the gun show at the county fairgrounds). 

Joining the NRA’s efforts are the California Rifle and Pistol Association, Second Amendment Foundation, Gun Owners of California, The National Association of Arms Shows, and dozens of esteemed law professors from law schools across the country.  Briefs arguing against the right to keep and bear arms were filed by the California State Sheriffs Association, the California Peace Officers Association, the California Police Chiefs Association, San Francisco, Oakland, the Legal Community Against Violence, the Brady Center, and other anti gun owner groups. 

All of the briefs, along with a history of the case, are posted at www.calgunlaws.com. 

With the supplemental briefs on the incorporation issue filed today, the Court will now set a date for oral argument. The Court will almost certainly have to decide the incorporation question, and then (assuming they find that the Second Amendment applies to the states) either decide whether the gun show ban ordinance violates the Second Amendment or send the case back (remand) to the trial court to make that determination.

McCain Recognizes Second Amendment

McCain AVOIDS offending conservatives in recent statement supporting gun rights (Columbus Dispatch).  McCain has consistently avoided offending conservatives on this issue, at least during this election, and I suppose we should be grateful:

"My opponent's unguarded comments reflect the common Washington view that the Second Amendment is a quaint custom that must now yield to the judgment of modern enlightened opinion," McCain said, suggesting that Obama would support gun control.

Turkey has approximately 2.5 million registered guns, while an estimated 5.5 million guns are believed to be owned without licenses. The number of individuals with access to a firearm in their family home is estimated at 40 million. Nearly 280,000 vehicles on Turkey's roads have a gun stored in the glove box.
