Conservatives love Ayn Rand for her great writing and the moral case she makes for individual freedom, but typically we reject her atheism. Many of us are surprised to learn she was anti-gun, or at least very equivocal on armed self-defense. Relevant Ayn Rand quotes:
“I do not know enough about it to have an opinion, except to say that it’s not of primary importance. Forbidding guns or registering them is not going to stop criminals from having them; nor is it a great threat to the private, noncriminal citizen if he has to register the fact he has a gun. It’s not an important issue, unless you’re ready to begin a private uprising right now, which isn’t very practical.” [Answer to question “What is your opinion on gun control laws?” at Lecture, “The Moratorium on Brains” (Boston, Ford Hall Forum, 1971).]
“It’s a complex, technical issue in the philosophy of law. Handguns are instruments for killing people—they are not carried for hunting animals—and you have no right to kill people. You do have the right to self-defense, however. I don’t know how the issue is to be resolved to protect you without giving you the privilege to kill people at whim.” [Answer to question “What’s your attitude toward gun control?” at Lecture, “Censorship: Local and Express” (Boston, Ford Hall Forum, 1973).]
Granted, Ayn Rand did not grow up with American gun culture (though my wife came from Soviet Ukraine and understands well the importance of guns). Also, she did not have benefit of the voluminous legal and criminological research over the last several decades demonstrating the utility of guns.
Yet in noting her surprisingly anti-gun statements it is interesting to speculate on whether her atheism may have something to do with her lack of enthusiasm for armed self-defense. Certainly many atheists lead great and good lives and make fine, upstanding, armed citizens. (I’m no theologian but I believe Ayn Rand, who died in 1982, is no longer an atheist; she’s up there somewhere and God has probably allowed her to rename it “Galt’s Gulch,” or at least “God’s Gulch.”) I just disagree that atheism works on a grand scale to encourage values we need in a free society. I believe this is why communists sought to destroy religion and family.
In talking with people about armed self-defense, it’s amazing how frequently I hear: “I’m afraid I would shoot someone.” I usually take this kind of statement to mean they are afraid of shooting an innocent person, but as I consider the Ayn Rand quotes above I wonder if in some cases there is a fundamental unwillingness out there even to shoot evil people in defense of innocent life. More often, it is probably just an increase in fear due to lack of a theological roadmap. I can talk to them about how the equities are usually pretty clear in the case of a violent criminal attack against a family member, and how firearms training can help you stay within the societal ethics prescribed by law, but people don’t usually make moral decisions of this nature based on what is “taught” by court and legislature (human institutions) – these people are perhaps really at some level concerned, justifiably, about possible deadly hesitation which may result from not having some kind of a theological guide on whether to pull that trigger. Many atheists get good firearms training and do fine with all this; just speculation here, but possibly this basic fear may dissuade the majority of atheists from getting any private training.
As Ronald Reagan said, “Evil is powerless when the good are unafraid.” (And as I said, atheists can of course be good.)
If you are going to use lethal force, in matters of life and death, your decision “damn” well better be morally correct. Not to draw too close a parallel between lethal force and the Holy Eucharist, note Paul’s warning in 1 Corinthians 11:27-29: “Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.”
Faith is acquired through study and practice, as is firearms proficiency. It can move mountains, and it can certainly remove deadly hesitation in responding to a violent attack on your family.

Bill Hunt is really locking in the endorsements, yesterday the Second Amendment March, now this:
Chris Norby: Why I Support Bill Hunt for Sheriff.
A sheriff should protect people’s liberties – not restrict them. The current appointed Sheriff has arbitrarily revoked legally issued CCW permits of law-abiding citizens who did nothing to deserve such treatment. A sheriff must face economic facts and work with the Board of Supervisors to adjust to revenue realities – not play a game of fiscal “chicken” and budget brinksmanship. A sheriff must instill in staff a respect for elected decision-makers – not use security cameras to spy on them. They should respect citizens’ rights to voice their opinions – not use government-issued blackberries to belittle them in public meetings. Bill Hunt understands this. He was there for us in 2006. He’s there now, again.

So far no other candidates have taken me up on my offer to open carry as a candidates-only demonstration. Not much support out there apparently - a local NRA leader's comment elsewhere that "open carry is foolish" was deleted right after i responded with invitation to join debate on this page. I think a lot of the folks that DO still have a permit do not actually use it very much. They do not live it every day like someone dedicated to the Second Amendment. They do not realize how "foolish" and impractical concealed carry can be on hot days, days with variable temperature, office environments--basically situations that demand changing the way you carry in different locales due to temperature or concern about "printing". Not a problem if you only carry on occasional evenings out, but a real inconvenience if you carry all the time, which i did for five years until the ccw i used to protect my wife and daughter was taken by the current sheriff. I just don't understand how OC can be called "foolish" when CC is not possible (no permit) and every day millions of "foolish" police choose to open carry, especially when we are just talking about a demonstration by candidates showing concrete support for the Constitution IN AN ELECTION WHERE ONLY REPUBLICANS CAN VOTE. With the school zone prohibition OC has very limited utility outside demonstration (not to minimize importance of demo) but can often make sense as a convenience around your immediate neighborhood, and for folks that enter and leave the house frequently it may even encourage you to carry more INSIDE the house (you will never make it to the safe in time, so you'd better carry in a way that is convenient).

SAF Press Release :: REPORT CONFIRMS MORE GUNS = LESS CRIME; NO PUBLIC SAFETY THREAT, SAYS SAF.
A report published by MSNBC.com confirms “everything gun rights groups have been saying for years, that more armed citizens does not equate to increased violence, and actually coincides with a reduction in homicides,” the Second Amendment Foundation said today. The on-line news agency this morning released an investigative report that record numbers of American citizens are now legally carrying firearms for personal protection. Yet, the report also reveals that homicide rates have declined dramatically during a period when gun sales have skyrocketed. Further, the report noted that Washington, DC with its extreme gun control has the highest murder rate in the nation, while Utah, with very liberal gun laws, has the lowest rate.

Those of you living in Ladera Ranch, as you drive home today you will pass under the “Doctor Guevara Way” sign along Crown Valley Parkway, and a few minutes later probably turn onto O’Neill Drive, named for a wealthy family responsible for resuscitating the Democratic (i.e., Socialist) Party in Orange County. You may see eco-caskets whizzing around (perhaps you’ve seen the whole fleet of them tucked away behind Covenant Pool). While driving, you may want to think about any control (on speech, or whatever) you may have personally experienced under the thumb of the new socialists (including a few RINOs) which seem to be entrenched in local community organizations.
Ladera Ranch is a beautiful place to raise a family, but realtor friends tell me it’s extremely liberal. Certainly, I’ve seen my share of socialists in Ladera community orgs, and Ladera Life has always seemed carefully controlled to present a certain image of the community. However, I disagree that the average Laderan is as liberal as these institutional meatheads: In gathering signatures to get on the ballot for Republican Central Committee, while being very open about what I believe, I was very much pleasantly surprised at the number (of Republicans at least) that support constitutional conservatives, and the magnitude and enthusiasm of that support. Only two refused to sign my nomination papers—one said she was a “Hillary supporter” and the other said, “Well, you know I’m a Canadian and probably shouldn’t be Republican anyway.” (Yes, I had a blast getting signatures, and the comic relief was welcome, too.)
As for the gentleman honored by the memorial plaque, I have no idea of his politics and he may have done some very great and good things, so this is not directed at him personally. But does anyone think that an individual similarly deserving but with the unfortunate hypothetical name of “Donald T. Heitler” would have been so honored with such a plaque, posted at Terramor Aquatic Park, which is frequented so frequently by the children of Ladera Ranch with their mothers and grandparents in tow? (But Uncle Joe’s popularity is surging again in Russia, so what the heck, why be concerned about so many kids seeing this?)
Stay safe,

My first blog http://daveduringer.blogspot.com/ narrates what happened on a night i will never forget, serving on the border with the California Minutemen in 2005. That was a great group of guys (multi-racial, lots of vets) though because of the risk and what i saw with another group, i decided not to continue. Still a good thing overall, but you may want to keep my experience in mind, in case you decide to participate in response to an alert such as the one below just issued by Minuteman Civil Defense Corps in AZ. Be careful out there, and know the people in your group:
This operation will not be for the faint of heart.
MCDC volunteers will work under an entirely different SOP; we will approach our duty as citizens as we should - we have a zero tolerance for any and all violations of our border and we will forcefully engage, detain, and defend our lives and country from the criminals who trample over our culture and laws.
Long arms will be allowed and frankly, encouraged. From the surveillance videos we have gathered in the field over the past six months it is more than evident the violators of our borders seem to have been given carte blanc permission to willfully violate our public safety. This time we will not be tempered by political correctness; every single individual we encounter WILL BE apprehended by Border Patrol with our help - even those who dare enter our country armed will be stopped and challenged. Political correctness is a fad of the past. This is for the survival of this great Republic!
Basic SOP changes will be as follows.
You are strongly recommended to bring a long arm - you will be permitted to carry long arms at all times on post as per Arizona State law. Thousands of individuals violate our borders 24/7 with the consent of President Barack Hussein Obama, Janet Napolitano and John McCain - you are strongly encouraged to exercise your rights and duty as an American citizen to carry a long arm and if challenged use it to defend the United States of America - something Obama, Napolitano and McCain refuse to do.

Even where OC is tactically inferior, it may be more socially responsible for citizens of a republic:
In the case of small unpalatable animals with warning colours the enemies would only first become aware of the unpleasant quality by tasting and often destroying their prey; but kin of the organism killed may gain by the experience thus conveyed, even though the individual might suffer. An insect-eating animal does not come into the world with knowledge: it has to learn by experience, and warning colours enable this education as to what to avoid to be gained by a small instead of a large waste of life. Furthermore, great tenacity of life is usually possessed by animals with warning colours. The tissues of aposematic insects generally possess great elasticity and power of resistance, so that large numbers of individuals can recover after very severe treatment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_colouration

There is some debate raging in Georgia about whether people should conceal their holstered handguns while in public. Some believe that wearing handguns openly will result in a loss of the element of surprise during a criminal attack, such as an armed robbery, while others believe that wearing handguns openly deters criminal attack. For Matt Brannan and J.P. Mitchell, who carry openly as a routine, the issue is no longer academic.

Even when Robin Williams noticed a child present and joked about the "new words" he was learning that night - even then - no one objected. Not one Democrat dared step forward and condemn the moment. Peer pressure is a powerful and coercive thing, for adults as well as children - one breaks rank at one's peril. And I'm sure it wouldn't have been good for "business" for the party leadership to create embarrassment at such a high-level Hollywood/corporate function. So everyone laughed.
This is not about politics. This is about corruption. Stop and think about it. Somehow Robin Williams knew that no one would object if he used the F-word and the S-word continually - even on national TV!...

More great analysis from my friend, Fred Schnaubelt:
LOCAL VIEW: Tea party and patriot 'movementeers'.
The "movementeers" reject the premise that 50 percent plus one gives any political party a 100 percent say over universal issues. Or that 49 percent must be happy losers until the next presidential election. There's but one way to control government beyond the chains of the Constitution. That's by limiting taxation (taxation which is necessary to fund every conceivable Democratic or Republican self-serving program). The "movementeers'" real, tangible power is in leveraging their 10-plus percent voting bloc to elect politicians who will restore the American free market, private property, limited government principles that have provided more for ever more people in the past 200 years than in the previous 2,000 years. FRED SCHNAUBELT lives in Rancho Bernardo.

We do however have at least one documented example in Kennesaw GA where a crew of armed thugs decided NOT to commit armed robbery in a waffle house because the thug who went in to scout the place before the crime saw Matt Brannan and J.P. Mitchell openly carrying their firearms. You can listen to Mark Walters of USCCA's Armed American Radio interview Matt Brannan and J.P. Mitchell for more details on the event. Over the years I have also heard multiple first hand accounts of possible criminals who seemed determined to commit a crime as they approached their potential victims, but suddenly turned away when they noticed a holstered firearm.

comment by "onedavetoomany" (not this Dave) on opencarry.org forum:
We should all support Bill Hunt's campaign for Orange County Sheriff. Mr. Hunt supports a shall-issue concealed carry permit system and posted the following response to my question about UOC: "It's legal and I am for it. I believe it is the responsibility of the Sheriff to protect the right of law abiding citizens to keep and bear arms. I believe the law does not go far enough in that if you are allowed to open carry, you should be allowed to do so with the firearm loaded. So the limited right given by the particular law (as opposed to the unlimited right given by the constitution) is an incomplete right and may cause those exercising that right to be at a tactical disadvantage." - Bill Hunt

2nd Amendment, CCW Protecting Your Constitutionally Guaranteed Rights! As your Sheriff, I will issue CCW's to any applicant who is a law abiding resident of the county, meets state mandated requirements and is not prohibited by law from possessing a firearm. To me, personal protection is good cause!

1. A number of the justices recognize that Slaughter-House Cases (1873) was wrongly decided, but are reluctant to overturn all the existing precedents that are derived from that. 2. Even those justices who don't like the Heller decision don't want to rock the boat on due process incorporation, preferring to come up with a narrower definition of the right for the states.

I honestly hope Scalia was kidding about not protecting concealed carry. It’s the only form of 2nd Amendment exercise that’s relevant in day to day life for the vast majority of Americans. To take that away from the 2nd Amendment is to render it meaningless as a practical and meaningful right. A right is not a right if it’s only allowed as a weekend hobby and/or only fully enjoyable by agorophobes.
