Ray, for starters we need to get our priests to celebrate our Catholic heritage and teach openly about the proper scope of self-defense as a necessary corollary to the right to life:
America’s Destiny Must Be Freedom - The Acton Institute.
As American citizens pontificate about the future of America this July 4th, they should ask themselves what they can do to curb the contraction of liberty and promote its expansion. It is the citizens, thankfully, who will decide America’s destiny.

Many years ago, as President of the Hastings Dive Club, I drew the line at admitting abalone-loving, free-diving snorkelers. Alito's dissent:
CHRISTIAN LEGAL SOC. CHAPTER OF UNIV. OF CAL.,HASTINGS COLLEGE OF LAW v. MARTINEZ.
I do not think it is an exaggeration to say that today’s decision is a serious setback for freedom of expression in this country. Our First Amendment reflects a “profound national commitment to the principle that debate on public issues should be uninhibited, robust, and wide-open.” New York Times Co. v. Sullivan , 376 U. S. 254, 270 (1964) . Even if the United States is the only Nation that shares this commitment to the same extent, I would not change our law to conform to the international norm. I fear that the Court’s decision marks a turn in that direction. Even those who find CLS’s views objectionable should be concerned about the way the group has been treated—by Hastings, the Court of Appeals, and now this Court. I can only hope that this decision will turn out to be an aberration.

Decision is located here: http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/09pdf/08-1521.pdf (The Heller decision two years ago held the Second Amendment guaranteed a fundamental individual right of self-defense, but until now this applied only against the federal government.) Genocide is an ugly subject that needs to be shoved into every generation’s face because the deliberate extermination of some targeted group by their own government occurs somewhere in the world during every generation. What does not need to be pushed in conjunction with that awareness is the propaganda of pacifist victimhood and the exoneration by omission of the most prolific mass murderers because of an affinity for their ideologies. One spreads the false perception that resistance is futile, that none of those marked for death can or have saved themselves by fighting back. The other avoids all mention of the political dogma solely responsible for most mass murder. Screamers is a documentary that does all of the above.

Dry Practice is a training technique— using an unloaded weapon— that gives you three, very important results: Repetitive Dry Practice engrains the proper gross neuromuscular pathways so you become smoother and faster in your gun handling skills such as Presentation from the Holster, Malfunction Clearances, Reloading etc. Repetitive Dry Practice engrains the proper fine neuromuscular pathways needed for perfect Sight Alignment, Sight Picture, and Trigger Control. Repetitive Dry Practice replaces the natural reflex to anticipate muzzle blast and recoil when the weapon fires, with a perfect surprise trigger break, thus preventing Pre-ignition Push, Heeling, Trigger Mash, Flinch, etc. and helps you develop the consistency and precision of a well oiled, shooting machine! In other words, every time you present your weapon and press the trigger with a live round in the chamber, there is a big bang and a push. Reflexively you will naturally begin to anticipate and prepare yourself for the bang and push, creating numerous bad habits that affect your marksmanship. The More You Shoot (as in hundreds of rounds in a single day) The More You Engrain These Bad Habits and the longer it takes to remove them. Perfect and repeated Dry Practice makes for a perfectly smooth and fast presentation, perfect sight alignment, and perfect trigger control—and that creates the ability to deliver a live shot with the speed and precision you only see in action adventure movies—but with you it will be real!

Another great homily at Mass today. I discovered this parish due to the curious statistical anomaly of so many of its parishioners attending my ccw classes. We also like going to Serra Chapel at Mission--homilies by Norbertines are great there too--but there is something special about OLHC that makes so many pro-gun Catholics drive long distances to attend Mass there. The Russians have a saying "Riba portitsya c golovi" (A fish rots from the head.) So many parishes are rotting from priests who are not men; families rot from fathers who are not men; and our nation is suffering this fate generally. When your priest owns an AK, those values are going to be reflected in the teaching and i certainly saw that today. We'll be back for more.

I met with one of the high-ups of a "catholic index fund" advisor and was told that the below exclusion would apply to any manufacturer of firearms, even of small arms for personal and family defense. Since self-defense is a right and even grave duty under our Catechism, and the Second Amendment derives from Catholic teaching on tyrannicide, and even war can be justified under Catholic Just War Doctrine, this blanket prohibition didn't seem very Catholic to me. I mentioned that many of my Catholic clients are pro-gun and would strongly disagree with this prohibition, and the reply I got was that the fund deals mainly with institutional investors, so it seemed the concerns of individual Catholics were not too relevant.
If you google the "Ecclesial Advisor" for the fund, Fr. Seamus P. Finn, you will find he is a "social justice" advocate ("Director of Justice/Peace and Integrity of Creation"), a proponent of IMF governance reform, and linked with Soros-type marxists and leftists (see for example here, here, here, here, and apparently if you have a password you can chat with Seamus about IMF Governance Reform on a ning page here.)

Yet another gripe i have against concealed carry (vs open carry) is that you don't know whether someone is carrying safely or what kind of training they have. One of the comments to the linked post points out a concern i've often had, especially during the five years i had a ccw here in OC, about the repetitive arming and disarming in public required due to situs restrictions on carry. The safest place for a handgun is in its holster, where it should stay as long as you are awake (on second thought--hearkening back to my eviction days--it can be difficult at times to stay awake in court).
Of Arms and the Law: Attorney shoots self in foot in court.
Safest place for a gun is in a proper holster. This is what happens when we require properly licensed/permitted persons to arm and disarm throughout the day.

NRA is right to focus on a single issue, yet fails to recognize the issue to focus on is Life (a/k/a Liberty). Read Bastiat's "The Law" and you'll realize you cannot separate the two. The Second Amendment simply guarantees an aspect of the right to life. The NRA at times erodes the right to life because when it comes to the Second Amendment, it has barrel vision. Worse, it is now running from battle in an effort to save itself while others carry the flag of freedom into the breech. The time is now for individuals to exercise their right to OPEN CARRY. Don't expect a pat on the back by the NRA.
