NRA: McCain has ‘work to do’ with gun owners

Link: TheHill.com - McCain has ‘work to do’ with gun owners: NRA.

If Sen. John McCain expects the support of gun owners in this year’s presidential race, the Arizona Republican must make an effort to overcome some decisions the National Rifle Association (NRA) has found troubling. “John McCain still has some work to do to give them a comfort level,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA, said during an interview with The Hill. “Truth be told, he’s not there yet.”

Pictures of Guns in School

I think from various news reports we have the impression that just about all schools have zero tolerance with respect to any child bringing any photo of a gun to school, and I would guess that Catholic schools would not be much better than government schools on this point.  Indeed, our daughter was in a Catholic school last year that seemed to have this extreme prejudice against guns.

So I was pleasantly surprised that my daughter's new Catholic school here in South Orange County, Serra Catholic School, took no adverse action when my daughter presented the pictures below in an album to her first grade class, along with a spirited recitation of Eddie Eagle's four admonitions:

  1. Stop!
  2. Don't Touch!
  3. Leave the Area!
  4. Tell an Adult!

Did Ayn's teacher make any derisive comments about guns?  No--she actually recalled before the class her own positive experience, as a little girl, shooting with her father!

All of the kids' albums were reviewed the following week by faculty and administration from other area schools, private and governmental, and we have had no negative feedback.

The picture of Ayn marching with Eddie Eagle below is from the recent St. Patrick's Day Parade in Hermosa Beach.  The picture of Ayn (wearing her Kalashnikitty T-Shirt) flanked by Marines is from her participation with NRA in last year's Memorial Day Parade.  The shooting pictures are from NRA's Family Fun Shoot last December benefitting Marines.  It was her first time shooting any rifle, she had a GREAT time.  She just got one of these (Henry .22 Mini Bolt Action Youth, with an orange stock) for her seventh birthday.

[FYI, video here.  Yes, I'm proud.]

Here are some of the pictures from her album:

John Longenecker's site is: Good For The Country

I just found John Longenecker's website site, "Good For The Country," due to his (much appreciated) request to be added to the "Catholic Guns" blogroll (right, sidebar) which I administer.  Now that I've seen his site, I recall seeing his work elsewhere.

Mr. Longenecker, one of the first paramedics in LA, articulate advocate of RTC and radio guest, now has a book out making the case for nationwide concealed carry.  The book is called Transfer of Wealth, a title I find interesting given my professional work as attorney and financial planner.

From the main page of Good For The Country is this reminder:

"Law enforcement agencies and personnel have no duty to protect individuals from the criminal acts of others; instead, their duty is to preserve the peace and arrest lawbreakers for the protection of the general public." - Lynch v. N.C. Dept. of Justice, 376 S.E. 2nd 247 (N.C. App 1989)

The idea that police can be relied on to protect everyone everywhere at all times (or at least, that there is no better solution than relying on police for such protection) is the primary example of what I call "blue helicopter thinking."  Thank you, Mr. Longenecker, for your efforts at countering this type of thinking.

I'm running for Idaho State Senate seat 22 against the Republican incumbent, who I don't see as conservative enough for our district. This was something of a last minute decision for me, and it was not an easy one. As this web page demonstrates, I am not spending money on campaign consultants and web developers. Please look around, and if you think I am a bit more what you think your representative in the upper house of the Idaho legislature should be, please vote for me in the May primary.

Obama Gets Richardson Endorsement

Richardson has received high ratings from gun groups for endorsing CCW, a reminder perhaps that pro-CCW is not necessarily pro-gun rights.

NEWS ALERT

from The Wall Street Journal

March 21, 2008

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is endorsing Sen. Barack Obama for president, calling him a "once-in-a-lifetime leader" who can unite the nation and restore America's international leadership, according to the Associated Press.

The governor's endorsement comes as Sen. Obama continues to build momentum in the contest for superdelegates against Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, even as national public opinion polling shows Sen. Clinton pulling ahead of the Illinois senator amid controversy over statements by his former pastor. As a Democratic superdelegate, Gov. Richardson plays a part in the tight race for nominating votes and could bring other superdelegates to Sen. Obama's side. He also has been mentioned as a potential running mate for either candidate.

Long Live OC CCW! Contact info (email, phone, fax) for Orange County Supervisors

UPDATE: I just spoke with a wealthy PI/former LEO who also has a CCW here in OC.  He warned me that backing the wrong horse for sheriff could result in my CCW being revoked if my horse loses.  I've already had to fight off one attempt to non-renew, and I certainly don't want to go through that again!  So this is not an endorsement of Bill Hunt--just urging folks to prod the Supes into appointing someone who, like Hunt, strongly supports CCW.....Isn't America great?  Maybe I'll retire there.

With Carona gone, there is an air of fatalism about gun rights in Orange County.  An NRA officer recently told me, pessimistically, that CCW is dead in Orange County, that most Orange County Supervisors are basically RINO's who do not share our values.  (Witness the sneaky multi-stage attempt to get rid of John Wayne's name from the airport.)  Maybe a positive can be found?  Maybe this will spur statewide RTC? So far, no legislator or candidadate has been gutsy enough to offer what has spread like wildfire across forty (40) states.  And the Respublikanskiys that are running?  Let's just say that after talking with them, I have serious doubts about their fealty to 2A.  What is it about their California constituents they find so inferior to residents of those forty (40) other states?  Are we not responsible enough?  Are we not men enough?  Are we not mothers enough?

I am not giving up.  I briefly tasted having my CCW non-renewed (until I appealed), as a result of some "free speech" of mine.  I don't carry as much as I used to, for practical reasons, but I didn't like--even temporarily--not having the option to protect my family.

Perhaps the recent Mission Viejo Mall Shooting will help our side.

Here is an email from Deborah Courtney, a local 2A activist:

-----------------------------------------------------------

Friends:

Bill Hunt is independent of all the nonsense that is involved with the Sheriff's Department, and he sacrificed his career to clean things up.  Unfortunately, The Machine was strong.

I personally attended meetings where 30 plus Deputies attended and gave their full support to Bill.  They are loyal to him, and respect him immensely.  At this time, they need someone with inside knowledge, and outside the box.

He is staunch Pro 2A and CCW, anti illegal immigration, and traditionally and fiscally Conservative.  He is endorsed by the deputies union, and the firemen.  They know a respected leader when they meet one.

I personally give Bill Hunt my endorsement, and am asking you to contact the Board of Supervisors and let them know that you do, too.

Also, please invite Bill to come and meet your friends, family, and service groups, and send messages to your friends in Orange County.  I encourage YOU to set up groups for him to meet.  He is willing to come out to meetings or groups and visit, and answer any questions as to how he would run the department as Orange County's next Sheriff, Sheriff Bill Hunt!

National Academy of Sciences Report Advises Against New National Database of Ballistic Images

National Academy of Sciences Report Advises Against New National Database of Ballistic Images

A national database containing images of ballistic markings from all new and imported guns sold in the U.S. should not be created at this time, says a new report from the National Research Council. Such a database has been proposed to help investigators link ballistics evidence -- cartridge cases or bullets found at crime scenes -- to a firearm and the location where it was originally sold. But given the practical limitations of current technology for generating and comparing images of ballistic markings, searches of such an extensive database would likely produce too many candidate "matches" to be helpful, the report says.

Link: Matthews Machine-Guns 2nd Amendment: 'I Want People Disarmed' | NewsBusters.org.

MURDOCK: Yah, I think that would probably be helpful. There are people who do conceal guns here, and to the extent that people think that criminals might be retaliated on, I think that helps keep the place safe. I would point out that Romney, who claims to be Mr. Second Amendment now, actually increased the cost for gun permits, and he claimed when he ran for governor that he wasn't a man of the NRA, and now that he's running for president he claims to be a lifetime member of the NRA -- lifetime being defined as joining in August of 2006. So even on the gun issue he's sort of all over the map.

It is not just issues like guns and abortion (this piece also hits him for his changing position on immigration). I have no problem with him learning on issues, but it is getting pretty obvious that Romney is an extremely poll driven candidate. Here is a decade ago arguing against cutting farm subsidies and here he is more recently saying how essential farm subsidies. Here he is saying that strict gun control helps protect Americans' safety, but now he is a defender of gun rights. (Personally, I am not sure that he knows what the current gun control laws are.) 89% of NRA-Endorsed Candidates Win

Link: NRA-ILA :: Legislation.

In contests in Kentucky, Mississippi, New Jersey, and Virginia, NRA's Political Action Committee, the NRA Political Victory Fund, issued 235 endorsements, of which a staggering 89% (210 out of 235) of candidates won their elections! These victories come on the heels of the election of Louisiana's Governor-elect, NRA-PVF-endorsed Bobby Jindal (R), who amassed enough votes in the primary election to avoid a runoff election.

Strong Endorsement From NRA Helps Elect First Non-white La. Guv Since Reconstruction (BONUS: He's Catholic and Pro-Life)

Link: Immigrants' son elected governor of La. - Politics - MSNBC.com.

U.S. Rep. Bobby Jindal easily defeated 11 opponents and became the state’s first nonwhite governor since Reconstruction, decades after his parents moved to the state from India to pursue the American dream.

Jindal received a strong endorsement from NRA:

Wayne LaPierre said, “Bobby Jindal is a doer, not a talker.  He's a true friend of freedom and the second amendment. That's why the NRA Political Victory Fund is endorsing his candidacy for governor of Louisiana. We will urge every NRA member, every hunter, and everyone who believes in freedom to vote Bobby Jindal for governor on Election Day.”

BONUS: Turns out he is Catholic and staunchly pro-life, too:

In an unsuccessful 2003 run for governor of Louisiana, Jindal was specifically targeted for his ardent pro-life positions.  At that time, he unapologetically stated to a local newspaper that he was "100 percent pro-life with no exceptions.  I believe all life is precious."

Gallup poll: HUGE Drop in Support for Gun Control

Recent Gallup poll shows huge drop in support for gun control, especially among women.  Support for more gun control dropped an average of 11% nationally since May 2000.  Among women it dropped 12%.  Among Easterners it dropped 16%.  Among political independents it dropped 18%.  There was an 11% drop in urban areas.  There was a drop after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, then it increased again briefly, but has dropped to new lows as government grows to fight terror, at the expense of individual rights and privacy, and as local police are increasingly federalized.

Link: Shrunken Majority Now Favors Stricter Gun Laws.

The gap between the proportion of Americans advocating stricter gun laws and those in favor of maintaining or weakening existing gun laws -- once nearly 60 points in favor of stronger gun control, and registering 14 points a year ago -- is just four points in Gallup's latest poll. According to the Oct. 4-7, 2007, survey, 51% of Americans believe the laws governing the sale of firearms should be more strict. When combined, the percentages saying the laws should either be kept as they are or made less strict is nearly as high (47%).
....
Americans' opposition to aggressive gun control is further evident in a question eliciting their attitude about the need to pass new gun laws. Gallup asked respondents whether they would prefer to see the United States enforce current gun laws more strictly and not pass new gun laws, or pass new gun laws in addition to enforcing current laws more strictly. A majority of Americans (58%) opt for focusing exclusively on better enforcement of existing laws -- a position similar to that advocated by the National Rifle Association.

NRA-ILA ALERT FOR CALIFORNIA - ACTION REQUIRED WEDNESDAY MAY 23

Virtual Rally -- Help Fight for the Second Amendment on
Wednesday, May 23!

Please Contact Your State Legislators!

Anti-gun hysteria has reached a fever pitch in the Golden State. The California legislature is considering numerous anti-gun bills this session that, if passed, will have dire consequences for California's law-abiding gun owners.

Gun-hating zealots have scheduled a "lobby day" at the State Capitol on Wednesday, May 23 to pressure your state legislators to stomp-out our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms in California. Gun banners from the Brady Campaign (formerly Handgun Control Inc.) will be lobbying at the Capitol in support of more gun control throughout the day.

Help Protect The Second Amendment in California by Contacting your State Assembly Member and State Senator on Wednesday May 23!

Here's what you can do to help!

·         On Wednesday, May 23, call, fax, and email the legislature between 9:30 AM until 4:00 PM and voice your opposition to any gun control proposals. Respectfully, tell your Assembly Member and State Senator to oppose any assault on our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.

·         Remember, anti-gunners will be visiting the legislative offices at the same time your calls, emails, and faxes will be arriving. To identify and contact your State Assembly Member and Senator click here. Complete contact lists for the Assembly and Senate are available below.

Assembly Roster

Senate Roster

·         Forward this message to every gun owner you know and include all gun clubs, stores, ranges and Second Amendment groups. Please cross-post this on the Internet on websites and firearm-related forums.

While there are numerous anti-gun and anti-hunting bills currently pending in the Assembly, two bills (AB 1471 and AB 1634) represent the most immediate threats, as they could be heard on the Assembly floor as soon as Thursday, May 24.

In the Senate, legislators may soon consider legislation, AB 821, to ban the use of lead ammunition for all big game hunting in the range of the California Condor. This bill has already passed the Assembly and is pending consideration in the Senate.

Help defend your Right to Keep and Bear Arms and hunting heritage in California. Please call your legislators on Wednesday, May 23 and ask them to oppose any assault on our Second Amendment rights and hunting heritage.

TOGETHER, OUR VOICES WILL BE HEARD!

TOGETHER, WE CAN STOP THE ANTI-FREEDOM FORCES AND
WIN BACK OUR RIGHTS!

To find further contact information or help identifying your legislators
please use the "Write Your Representative" feature found at www.NRAILA.org.

WND: Guns, the devil and God

Link: "Guns, the devil and God" (WorldNetDaily).  David Kupelian analyzes the anti-gun left:

As a general rule, it is liberals who tend to oppose private citizens carrying guns around with them. As I said, this is mostly because they're full of suppressed anger and therefore project their own – and others' – evil onto inanimate objects so as to maintain the denial in which they live. After all, you can't possibly believe the illogical and immoral things liberals and leftists espouse unless you're full of trauma and repressed hatred. It takes lots of inner rage to distort reality sufficiently to believe it's OK to kill beautiful little babies in their mothers' wombs...

Even the irrational fear Kupelian writes of can be cured through proper training.  Too often, the anti-gun leftist has never had the opportunity to train properly.  If she was ever given a weapon to fire, it was probably of a very large caliber (to impress her), and she was never taught proper gun handling, particularly the "four rules of reasonable gun control."

Chilling Video: Former Disney Chair Eisner Advocates Brainwashing of Public (i.e., appealing to emotions) On Gun Issue

VIDEO OF EISNER: Link: Hot Air » Blog Archive » Video: Eisner says it’s time to get the public “emotional” about gun control.

“I’ve always wanted to do position through story on the ridiculousness of having guns and automatic weapons in our society. And it’s been very much obviously in the news, sadly, sadly. But when you’re in a public company and you’re in Washington — I was just saying “Don’t fight the NRA” — or you’re in a big company where your major constituencies are middle Americans, and where you don’t own the company, you’re working for your shareholders, you’ve got to be very careful. And we pushed through same-sex health insurance, some very advanced things… But we never could do the kind of material that I can now do because nobody can tell me I can’t do it. So I think the solution is to get the public, in an emotional, story-driven way, behind the goal of an abolition of handguns and automatic weapons. Because politicians are almost co-conspirators in this bloodshed. They are chickens, I was even a little chicken at Disney. Nobody will take on what I consider the imbecilic arguments of arming America.”

If not chilling to you, you might want to check out "Innocents Betrayed," a documentary by Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, showing how gun control routinely precedes genocide.

I am the president of the largest civil-liberties organization this nation has ever seen. No, it's not the ACLU. It's not the NAACP. It's the NRA.

ABC's 20/20 Seeks Armed Citizen Stories

(Via NRA-ILA.)  ABC's 20/20 show (one of the few that approach the gun issue with some fairness, at least with reporting by John Stossel re: Myths of Gun Control), now seeks "armed citizen" self-defense stories.  You can sumit the story with a simple online form on ABC's site.  (I like that the form acknowledges: "Perhaps you warded off a potential attacker by simply showing a gun?")

Thanks, Faciamus!

Thank you, Faciamus!, for joining the Catholic Guns blogroll.

I also should note that awhile back I got a kind and supportive email about the blogroll from Dave Kopel.

(You don't have to be Catholic to put it on your site--I'll send you the code and add you to my other blogroll instead, as you prefer.)

How to Join: "Catholic Guns" Blogroll

If you are a Catholic gunblogger, please consider joining the "Catholic Guns" blogroll (sidebar):

  1. Add to your site a link back to this page.
  2. Let me know (info-at-lawnews-dot-TV).
  3. I will then add you to the roll.
  4. If you want the code to add the full roll to your site, let me know that, too, and I will send it.

This is simply a way for Catholic bloggers to keep an eye on how our parishes/schools treat the issue of self-defense, an issue which should be on par with other right-to-life issues. There are other Catholics leading on this issue such as Dave Kopel and John Snyder, but I am not aware of any other blogroll such as this, so here goes.  I have "primed" the list with several pro-gun Catholic celebrities.

SoCal NRA Members' Councils Sponsor Charity Shoot for Injured Marines

NRA Members' Council of Orange and NRA Members' Council of Huntington Beach are sponsoring a Charity Fun Shoot, to be held at Burro Canyon on April 28, 2007.  The fee is $15 for an entire day on the range.  This is a major outdoor range and you can bring just about anything--rifle, pistol and shotgun.

If you are in or near SoCal ask your pastor/rabbi/community leaders to help publicize this event: Download the flyer (pdf).

All proceeds go to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund (www.semperfifund.org), to benefit injured marines and their families.
