Live fire is important to validate training and practice, but too much live fire can actually degrade performance. Not to mention, ammo's expensive! Renewal of Concealed Firearm Instructor License

Late last week, I flew to Utah on a quick trip to take the renewal course for my license to teach the course Utah requires for its Concealed Firearm Permit, issued to nonresidents (even Californians) and the closest thing we have to a national ccw as it is recognized in 30 states (for us Californians). Instructors must renew every three years. Aside from renewing the license, there are a few other changes to the free concealed carry class I offer:

(1) My law office has moved to a new, larger suite, with space dedicated especially to firearm training;

(2) My laser simulated shooting range has been upgraded with the latest technology and works fantastically well;

(3) I also offer the Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC card) required to purchase a handgun in California.

Six Months of License Renewal Hell

I’m entering the final stretch of a six month ordeal at renewing various licenses. Seven months, if you include December’s last minute CLE to maintain my Washington bar ticket. (California CLE was due the prior year.) In addition to preparing for tax season(!) as a tax preparer and digesting changes affecting trust attorneys, early this year I had to renew my notary commission; in May I’ll renew my CA real estate broker license; and in June I’ll fly to Utah to renew my Concealed Firearm Instructor license.  As a firearms instructor, I also obtained certification by CA DOJ to issue the Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) required to purchase a handgun in CA.

Choice of Gun

This brief post is not to advise on what type of gun to buy, but to urge you to get training before buying so you will not waste money and time training with something that is not right for you.  This post was prompted by a twitter follower tweeting that her husband bought a .357 that is too heavy for her.  For some reason, Hollywood I guess, people without training tend to buy .357 and 9mm handguns.  I get the sense people think these are powerful calibers, yet the stopping power is lower with these than with the calibers you typically see where I train.  Where I train, you see mainly 1911's (.45ACP) and glocks (or glock derivatives), usually chambered in .40 or greater.  Yes, many train with 9mm because it's cheaper, but generally you want to train with what you use for defense.  Proper grip and stance have a lot to do with "how much gun" you can handle so please, get trained before you buy (rent or borrow in the meantime).

Front Sight: Much more than a Disneyland

Front Sight is often called "a Disneyland for gun owners" but a discussion on the radio with Glenn Beck reminded me how much more it is than a Disneyland.  Beck was discussing the "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" and how that history used not the word "entertainment" but the word "amusement" to describe the role of "bread and circuses" figuring so prominently in the decline of aforesaid empire.  To "muse" is to inspire.  Just as "amoral" means lacking morality, "amuse" means simply to entertain without inspiration.  A long time ago, the word even meant "deceive."

Must a CCW Instructor Have Personal Experience with Defensive Gun Use?

In an interview by Daniel Shaw of Gunfighter Cast of firearms training legend Massad Ayoob, they both seemed to agree that direct self-defense gunfighting experience is not necessary for a ccw instructor.  Daniel had to shoot in combat but pointed out this differs from situation where civilian must quickly decide whether to shoot or even draw.  Massad said he had to draw six times but never had to shoot, though came close.  Massad said there are so many different scenarios that can occur, no instructor can be an expert based on personal experience and should be more like a funnel for the student, transmitting generally accepted principles.  In a statutorily required CCW class such as the one I teach, most of the instruction is on legal and ethical considerations in using lethal force.  Although introduced to the basics of weapons handling and tactics, students are expected to continue their training and practice regularly.  In my own course, I do relate and discuss my own personal experience in drawing my gun to defend myself against a threatened attack as it illustrates many of the issues involved with civilian defensive gun use, and how police may view these issues versus civilian firearms instructors, because of the different focus in training.

TINNITUS

Catching part of the Sean Hannity show yesterday, I heard Hannity say due to his six week ordeal with tinnitus (ringing in the ears) he pretty much stopped shooting, despite a longtime involvement in the sport and having ccw’s in several states (including California).  He did say he might take his son out this summer with a .22 but that’s about it.

It happened to me about five years ago when I was helping teach a firearms course as an assistant instructor.  Dumb mistake:  I forgot my own electronic ears and borrowed the range’s ears without knowing the condition of those ears.

Lately I’ve been hearing a lot of commercials for tinnitus remedies so it seems the problem is on the rise.  There are many groups affected—veterans, aging concert goers, motorcyclists—but due to the growth in the popularity of shooting many shooters are affected, and maybe it will help someone out there if I comment briefly about my own experience.  I was never much of a concertgoer, never much of a motorcyclist, and I am not a vet, so I didn’t know anyone else with the problem and that made it worse.

First, let me say definitely go see a doctor with expertise in this area.  In rare cases, the problem may have a physical origin other than loud noise, such as a tumor that a surgeon can remove.  Nothing I say here is medical advice and I am not a doctor (of medicine).  These are just my own experiences and your mileage may vary.

BAD NEWS:  Most of the time, tinnitus is caused by excessive noise and there is really nothing they can do, it seems.  They may prescribe some kind of pill for it, but that is just to give you something to rely on while your body and mind adjust to the problem.  Be careful not to cause more health problems by overdoing it with any of these pills, and definitely stay away from alcohol (just makes it worse).

GOOD NEWS:  You WILL adjust, and the problem will become minor and infrequent—eventually—it’s just a question of when.    Many people recover in only a few weeks, as did Sean Hannity.  In my case, it was absolutely horrible (my worst health problem ever) for close to a year and a half.  Like Hannity, aside from the ringing I experienced some hyper-acuity—very strange and very scary.  When it happened I was finishing up a masters in tax law and was interviewing for a job in a big law firm.  I got the job, but it was a very rough year.  After about two years, I would say the problem was minor.  I would much rather have this then, say, back pain or a number of other common ailments.  Most of the time I don’t notice the noise, and when I do my reaction is “ahh, so what” because I know it will disappear.

The cause is physical, but the recovery is mental.  If you are like me and tend to focus intensely on things, your initial “horrible” period may be lengthy like mine.  One particular thing helped me improve dramatically, and I urge you to try this:  I started keeping track of which days were good, which were bad.  Sounds simple and goofy, but it worked because it allowed me to focus on the positive, on the half full rather than half empty, and realize things were not that bad.  After that, the problem immediately improved.  It’s now been about five years and the problem is so minor as to not significantly affect me.

Deal with it as you must during the initial “horrible” period.  When it happened to me, I took the Second Amendment bumper stickers off my Tahoe.  I just did not want to be encouraging others toward guns when this awful thing could happen to them.  The VERY next day, I got better bumper stickers advocating the Second Amendment even more effectively.  As bad as  the tinnitus was, I knew how necessary guns were given the direction of the country. 

Although I’m sure many atheists get through this fine, I think it’s a huge help to have faith.  Tinnitus really ranks up there as a faith-building ordeal.  For me, it helped to attend Stations of the Cross and view it as sharing a small sliver of wood from that Cross.  I also took sailing lessons.

Stay in good spirits.  It WILL get better.

DO protect your hearing from further damage.  DON’T let tinnitus keep you away from shooting, a responsibility we all have as free men.  DON’T let it prevent you from teaching the next generation of patriots.  Because of my experience, I discuss tinnitus and hearing protection at length in my CCW CLASS (http://worldexaminer.com).

Restrictions on Carry Create Special Hazard for Public

Yet another gripe i have against concealed carry (vs open carry) is that you don't know whether someone is carrying safely or what kind of training they have. One of the comments to the linked post points out a concern i've often had, especially during the five years i had a ccw here in OC, about the repetitive arming and disarming in public required due to situs restrictions on carry. The safest place for a handgun is in its holster, where it should stay as long as you are awake (on second thought--hearkening back to my eviction days--it can be difficult at times to stay awake in court).

Get Ready for Bill Hunt's Election Now

Once Bill Hunt is elected Sheriff this June, he is widely expected to issue CCW's based upon a good cause standard of mere personal protection (which was good enough for the Founders!), as long as the applicant is otherwise qualified.  However, the application form will likely be similar to the current form, and it may still help to be able to state that you have a ccw issued by another state (see picture of current question on this).

So how do you fix this problem that 99% of the shooting population has to a lesser or greater degree? Stop shooting so much and DRY PRACTICE. Do lots of PERFECT Dry Practice. 95% of your practice should be dry (gun unloaded) and every time you press the trigger you want to take the slack out and press smoothly and evenly until the hammer falls without the muzzle (focus on the front sight) moving or dipping. This reflexively trains your brain, nerves and trigger finger muscles to allow a surprise trigger break and this results in super accurate shooting.

Eight year old boy shooting Uzi submachine gun with father at organized event dies tragically.  I posted recently on my 7 year old daughter shooting an Uzi when we went to Front Sight over July 4th.  (She'll get to do it again next weekend.)  At Front Sight, the instructor holds the weapon as the child shoots, and the bursts are short--2 or 3 rounds.

Low Light Training at Front Sight

Still new at mobile blogging...will try to do better on photos tonight...we will have professional fireworks here before just about everyone...after class ends at 115am...last night marked my first training at Front Sight in over a year and my daughter's first ever...she loves the childrens achievement camp...rope, rappelll, 22 rifle, astronomy (so many stars here), rock climbing, condition yellow mindset, etc..already has made a friend from san diego, another girl whose family also has membership at escondido fish n game assn...they can practice on their .22s together.
...classes held at nighttime because of intense july heat, good oppty for important low light training.
...even have my wife open carrying...around hotel, supermarket, etc...russian babushka probably thinks we are nuts...nye county is real america and it' s refreshing...open carry may be impeached on tactics but of course there are various retention designs and with permit you can have concealed backup and the educational value of open carry is at least as great as either the stigma attached to an honourable implement of freedom due to its forced concealment, or the inconvenience and discomfort of carrying it concealed whereever weather does not stay exactly the same all day.
...very pleased that saddle west hotel new owners ditched rule against guns in unit...my car was broken into last time I suspect because of that rule.
