Eddie Eagle teaches gun safety to kids:
Still new at mobile blogging...will try to do better on photos tonight...we will have professional fireworks here before just about everyone...after class ends at 115am...last night marked my first training at Front Sight in over a year and my daughter's first ever...she loves the childrens achievement camp...rope, rappelll, 22 rifle, astronomy (so many stars here), rock climbing, condition yellow mindset, etc..already has made a friend from san diego, another girl whose family also has membership at escondido fish n game assn...they can practice on their .22s together.
...classes held at nighttime because of intense july heat, good oppty for important low light training.
...even have my wife open carrying...around hotel, supermarket, etc...russian babushka probably thinks we are nuts...nye county is real america and it' s refreshing...open carry may be impeached on tactics but of course there are various retention designs and with permit you can have concealed backup and the educational value of open carry is at least as great as either the stigma attached to an honourable implement of freedom due to its forced concealment, or the inconvenience and discomfort of carrying it concealed whereever weather does not stay exactly the same all day.
...very pleased that saddle west hotel new owners ditched rule against guns in unit...my car was broken into last time I suspect because of that rule.
Finger straight, watch muzzle, etc.

David Hardy notes that in addition to mandating a trigger lock design that was almost certain to result in negligent discharge over time, TSA rules also mandated its use multiple times during a flight.

These concerns might also have application to excessive requirements by numerous employers and business establishments to require loading/unloading of guns, locking them in cars, etc., by CCW holders.

Putting a lock on a trigger involves this exact type of risk unless you are also going to require the pilots to load and unload the gun once they get on the plane. Indeed, it is precisely because of this concern that trigger lock makers warn people not to put these locks on a loaded gun.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A 6-year-old girl whose intestines were partially sucked out by a swimming pool drain, leading to tougher safety legislation, has died, her family's attorney said Friday.
To the list of plastic water buckets and bathtubs, now we can add dog leashes. A new CDC report notes how dangerous leashes and bungee cords are: At least 82 youths have died from the so-called "choking game," according to the first government count of fatalities from the tragic fad.

This is welcome news from UK, and not to look a gift horse...but my daughter would aggressively dispute the notion that toy guns are just good for boys. Link: BBC NEWS | Education | Toy weapons 'help boys to learn'.
Boys in nursery schools should not be discouraged from playing with toy guns and other weapons, the government says.
Link: The Swamp: Huckabee's muzzle control problem.
Suffice to say, if any of our hunting mates had pulled a stunt like Huckabee’s yesterday, we never would have invited them back. It’s the sort of behavior that drives safety-conscious hunters up the wall, because it reinforces a reckless, gun-totin’ stereotype.
Six-year old Ayn Duringer learned to safely operate a .22 bolt action rifle in one lesson last Saturday, at the NRA/USMC Toys4Tots Family Fun Shoot, sponsored by the Huntington Beach NRA Members Council. She also shot a revolver, with a little help from Dad.
Can her teachers learn to safely carry at school? Of course they can, and they should.

The gun banners like to say that kids shouldn't be "exposed" to firearms. But we don't get to choose what our children are exposed to. We can't keep an eye on them 24 hours a day. When you keep that in mind, education is always going to be better than ignorance, and the thousands of students who take part in this program are the literal living proof of that.

You can copy the code for the Front Sight links from this
page:

Why am I doing this? Why am I giving you such an unbelievable opportunity to take a Four Day Firearms Training Course at Front Sight at no cost?
The answer is very simple:
Last weekend I took another defensive handgun course out at Front Sight, where I'm a "Bronze First Family" lifetime member. It's been awhile since I've been out there, so I took the basic two-day course and re-visited some fundamentals. I noted a lot of good changes since my last visit: FS has implemented a type of student coaching system, where all students get some instructor-type experience, basically as line coaches (mine was a pastor at a large Calvary Chapel congregation, so it wasn't that harsh); the large classroom at FS was almost completely full, and there has been a marked increase in the number of kids attending the various youth camp classes; the firearm training is still top-notch, as are the required lectures on the various moral, ethical and legal implications.
For the first time on this trip, I open carried in Pahrump. Previously, I'd used my NV CCW but this expired and I don't favor the gun listed on it, anyway. (Rather than reapplying, I'm hoping for reciprocity to be passed.) I had heard from FS that open carry was legal and welcomed in Nye County (absent posting), and specifically that it was OK at the Albertson's supermarket in town. When I drove into town, there happened to be, right there in the Albertson's parking lot, about a dozen sheriff deputies running a child car seat safety check event, so I pulled up and double checked with the deputies about open carry. They affirmed it was OK, and pointed out to me that the holster must be OWB, not IWB. Properly rigged with OWB and a couple spare mags on support side, after getting one of the deputies to take my picture in front of the Albertson's sign I ventured forth to savor the experience of open carry. It was really cool for awhile to walk around in a supermarket like that without anybody reacting negatively, but Nye County is an atavistic remnant of an America that has disappeared and I would not want to try this elsewhere until America is revived.
Even in Pahrump, there is a criminal element. I had personal experience with it on this trip when someone tried to break in to my vehicle, doing over $1000 in damage. I believe the break-in was because of Saddle West Hotel's new policy telling folks to keep their guns in their cars rather than allowing them to bring them up to their rooms. (Despite the policy, I did not leave mine in my vehicle.)
If I had television (my daughter thinks Ukraine is advanced because they actually broadcast cartoons through the air), I would certainly watch this (and 24) - here is an excerpt from Naish's latest email:

PS Our stats continue to increase each week! The positive word is spreading as more and more people are tuning in to see the only show in America that pits highly skilled law enforcement officers against exceptionally trained private citizens in an exciting battle of skills at arms!
Click here for NRA's info sheet and one-click opposition. Great job, De Leon. Let's make it difficult for law abiding citizens to practice shooting safely and effectively!
Sure, criminals can already (illegally) buy cheap guns on the street--but they will NEVER be able to buy ammo illegally, and they would NEVER bring it in from out-of-state or across the border, and they would NEVER dare reload in their garages, and certainly they would never steal it!

NRA Members' Council of Orange and NRA Members' Council of Huntington Beach are sponsoring a Charity Fun Shoot, to be held at Burro Canyon on April 28, 2007. The fee is $15 for an entire day on the range. This is a major outdoor range and you can bring just about anything--rifle, pistol and shotgun.
If you are in or near SoCal ask your pastor/rabbi/community leaders to help publicize this event: Download the flyer (pdf).
All proceeds go to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund (www.semperfifund.org), to benefit injured marines and their families.
I just called to arrange Eddie Eagle materials (Link: NRA's Eddie Eagle Gunsafe Program) for my daughter's birthday party and found out something interesting: Last summer, the Los Angeles Police Department ordered five hundred (500) Eddie Eagle kits for teaching gun safety in local schools. Considering how anti-gun Los Angeles pols are, that is an enormous feather in this bird's cap and shows how respected the program is even though others have tried to copy it.
[Although recent Eddie Eagle assistance to New Orleans has been publicized, no press releases were issued on the Los Angeles materials sent last summer, due to apparent local need for political stealth. Of course, now that the "World Examiner" has broken the news...]
If you haven't already, show the Eddie Eagle music video to your child. Navigation to this video can be a little difficult on nranews.com, so I posted link with instructions at www.lawnews.tv

Front Sight Challenge, the new TV series produced by the esteemed Front Sight Firearms Training Institute, will air on Outdoor Life Network starting Friday, January 5 at 5:30pm and Saturday, January 6 at 2:00pm (click link below for trailer).
I attended Front Sight's submachine gun course in June 2000, and eventually bought life memberships for myself and my family. Front Sight made me a "gun enthusiast" and a better citizen. As a result of my Front Sight experience, I became an NRA/CRPA life member and an NRA Instructor for Pistol and Refuse to be a Victim.
I was surprised to learn at yesterday's meeting of a local Catholic lawyers group that another lawyer at my table was also a Front Sight First Family member (and an NRA officer). Front Sight has an effective strategy for changing the image of gun ownership. Please tune in, if you have television (I don't).

Link: You've Got to BB Kidding Me!. Excerpt:
Every NRA member and gun owner understands that an airgun can serve as a valuable means of teaching a child safety and responsibility. If a responsible parent wants to give his or her kid a BB gun for Christmas, that's not alarming. That's good parenting.
Link: ABC News: Keeping Kids Safe From Gun Accidents. Excerpt:
"Not everyone believes that is all good advice. John R. Lott Jr. at the American Enterprise Institute says gun locks are costly and can be dangerous. Lott says if a violent criminal enters a house, there may be no time for the gun owner to get the lock off. Still, many police departments across the nation have distributed free trigger locks under grants from the federal government."
Good sign that ABC actually quotes Dr. Lott. The safest place for a gun is generally on your person.
Link: ABC News: To Teach or Not Teach Gun Safety in School.
If you watch the NRA's highly effective Eddie Eagle program, which I link to here, there appears to be no basis for the fear that Eddie Eagle is a Joe Camel-type influence. Guns are not in any way glorified, but the anti's want to go a step further in programming kids against future usage of guns as adults.
Link: Farmington Daily Times - Police stress gun safety.
Excerpt - first paragraph:
No parent expects their gun to kill their child — but it happens too often, said Dan Patterson, an investigator with the La Plata County Sheriff's Office.
Excerpt - last paragraph:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 297 children between the ages of 5 and 14 were killed by accidental gunfire between 1999 and 2003. That amounts to less than 1 child in 100,000 being killed by accidental gunfire.
That's less than 100 per year in a nation of 300 million people. Other risks posing a greater danger to kids (drowning in water buckets, crossing the street) are ignored by the press, which continues to sensationalize gun accidents. Accidents have dropped even as gun ownership has rapidly expanded. Accidents are highly preventable in this age group through gun education, yet groups with an anti-gun agenda (American Academy of Pediatrics, for example) have opposed gun education in schools, even if it is simply teaching kids to stay away from guns.

Most of America's 2,000,000 concealed weapon permit holders aren't all that impressed with Bond, either, at least with regard to gun handling.
Link: School fits gun education into sixth grade curriculum - North County Times - State / West (AP). Excerpt:
...school children are going to encounter guns one way or another, whether venturing armed into nearby wilderness or visiting the home of a friend....
Link: Boy wounded while playing with gun.
"Police say they do not believe the gun came from the home and that one of the two boys brought it there...."
Not having a gun in your home is no excuse for failing to teach basic gun safety and gun handling skills. Only a parent can determine what level of training is appropriate, but many 12- and 13-year olds have successfully learned to handle guns safely and small children can be taught to avoid them.
