Great story here illustrates several important points.  Carjacking is increasingly common, especially at gas stations.  Never leave your child unattended (heat is not the only threat).  Get a good sight picture before firing off a round (story says 20 shots fired, not sure by whom).  Obviously, the main thing is have a gun, and this family is very lucky.

Armed Citizens Subdue Suspect Shooting 2nd Grade Girls at Carlsbad School

Story here.  Most of the stories on this and statements by officials seem to be playing up the police role in "rendering the weapons safe" and playing down the role of the heroic construction workers who subdued the attacker, first by hitting him with a truck (a vehicle can be used as a weapon as it was in this case). If the construction workers are mentioned, most of the stories seem to merely state they "tackled" the attacker.

Also note the suspect shot from outside the school fence, where an armed citizen legally carrying openly (an impossibility because of the ban on open carry in school zone) would have almost certainly deterred such an attack from even happening.

Maybe I missed something but i had the impression from the iview that she could not get to her gun until he set his gun down.

Could she have drawn her gun at any time and justifiably shot? Yes, but she correctly recognized that such actions were not needed and in doing so demonstrates for all the world to see, how responsible and rational gun-owning citizens stop crime and save lives without killing anyone.

The images you see at left and below are taken from the blog of a gentleman I met on February 20, 2009, in the parking lot outside my office. The circumstances of our meeting are largely captured by the 911 recording (via Bluetooth EARPIECE!) you can hear by turning up your speakers and refreshing this page. I made the call to 911 as I approached to help someone I thought was having a seizure. I did not realize this student from an upstairs university had put the whole building in lockdown.

You can hear him admitting insanity, then (abruptly rising to his feet) shouting "IF I SEE F***S ON THE STREET I'M GONNA KILL 'EM!" I was the only one on the street, about 6 to 8 feet away when the large man uttered the word "kill" - one second later, my weapon was out (low ready, not pointed in) and I was shouting "STOP RIGHT THERE! STOP RIGHT THERE!" as I backed up. He kept coming toward me even as I withdrew, until I quit talking to 911 and stood my ground briefly with more aggressive stance and demeanor (weapon still at low ready). Many witnesses watched from above including several, ironically, from the conference room six floors up where I would teach a concealed carry class the following morning.

Seriously, this film is highly recommended, brilliant on many levels as it illustrates family loyalty, the need to bear arms in protection of life, dignity of women, and even dignity of the unborn.  Tremendous (all the more because it's TRUE) story of how the Bielski brothers saved thousands of fellow Jews and trained them to fight against the Nazis.  (I've heard of Jews fighting back in the Warsaw ghetto, but had not heard of the Bielski brothers and their fellow partisans, who fought in Byelorussia.)
